City: Duque de Caxias

Type of property: Rural - organic farm
Size (ha): 10000m2
Crops: We grow many organic vegetables such as couve manteiga, cucumber, mustard leaves, parsley, basil, tomatoes, radishes, beets, carrots, sweet peppers, lettuce and pumpkin - we have plans to plant more varieties in the future. We also raise new chickens.
We speak: Portuguese, Spanish, English, German & Dutch fluently
Description: We are situated in the middle of the Tingua Reserve, outside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We work to take children away from aggression, drugs and criminality in Rio and its surrounding suburbs by providing them with shelter, nutrition, education and a lot of freedom to play.
We are looking for volunteers interested in learning farming/gardening skills while participating in a social project at an orphanage. Since its creation in 2007 our organic farm has grown immensely. This year we have added an apprenticeship program to get our teenagers involved in the project, called Clube Verde. Volunteers will be responsible for daily maintenance and will also work closely with the teenagers. A desire to work with adolescents is essential! Organic farming skills are very welcome since our project is young and our team is still learning. However, this is not a must and you will quickly learn the basics. It is important that you be ready to work hard and have a willingness and ability to do physical labor!
We are also looking for a project leader to help with continuity and development and to enhance the involvement of the children and the community. Volunteers in this position must efficiently manage the project and the other organic farming volunteers. As the project is still evolving we are open to new ideas and suggestions.
Open to volunteers willing to work approximately 6 hours a day in a team of Brazilian staff, adolescents, and international volunteers. We need enthusiastic, hardworking, and nature-loving volunteers. We are situated at the outskirts of the Tingua nature reserve, which means that you will be surrounded by beautiful green mountains. This is a fantastic experience and a great opportunity to get to know Brazil, its people, the local way of life, and yourself on an entirely new level!
Long Term objectives of our farming project:
1. Provide quality food to the children and teenagers
2. Provide farming education to the children and teenagers
3. Make the project self-sustaining and guarantee continuity
4. Pass on knowledge to the surrounding impoverished farmers
Accomodation: Volunteers receive accommodation and food in exchange for their services. Shared accommodation is available in the volunteer's house, which houses up to 10 volunteers involved in various roles in the orphanage. There is normally space for 2-3 WWOOFers to work on the organic farm.
Food: Meal times are shared with the children as a community. There is also a kitchen available in the volunteer's house if you wish to prepare your own food.
We are: a group of volunteers, the local staff and the kids!
When to come: All year - minimum stay of 6 months
Additional comments: The organic farming project is located within the orphanage grounds, therefore it is important that volunteers enjoy or have experience working with children. Volunteers can combine their organic farming work with various tasks in the orphanage and activities with the children.

City: Carlos Euler (Passa Vinte)
State: Minas Gerais
Type of property: Reforestation of the Atlantic Forest-not a farm
Size (ha): 75
Crops: curitiba, cinnamon, guapuruvu, Brazilian wood, pau ferro
We speak: Portuguese
Description: We are dedicated to reforesting the property with native plants in extinction. Our main activity is to produce 4 types of organic plants to be sold: olive, lichie, coffee, and Palmito Jucassara. We collect the seeds, cultivate and plant them. These should start to produce in 2012. The personal who takes care of the functionality of the farm speaks portuguese only. It would be best if WWOOFers know some Portuguese. The chores in the farm depends on the season, here is a summary of the activities: September - February (Summer): planting of nurseries. During September - October we collect the seeds. This requires knowledge of climbing trees. From March to June, we clean the nurseries planted, on average 20,000 per year. From July to August - maintenance and construction of small facilities, such as new barn, wooden dryer, stone mill, maintenance of farm access, etc.. Also in August and September to prepare areas for planting. In the rainy season from January to April, field work may be interrupted. In this case we work in carpentry and nurseries, which are protected from the rain. Wwoofers make trips through the woods accompanied by responsible who will be showing the native species, wildlife and assists in seed collection, georeferencing, open trails, climbing trees, etc. Moreover, the region is full of trails, waterfalls besides having a very rich fauna, by having both creativity and liking the subject, there is plenty of opportunities for development and research. The reason for this wealth is that we are exactly at the interface of the cerrado with forest and it provides us a rich eco-system. We handle dangerous tools like chainsaw, mower, scythe, machete, so it is important that wwoofers inform us about the knowledge with such tools, otherwise they should learn how to operate these tools. We do not accept alcoholic drinks and cigarettes on the property.
Accomodation: We have a house available with: 2 bedrooms, bathroom, living room, kitchen. Can receive up to 4 volunteers.
Food: Meals are prepared by us during the day. Dinner will be ready (to be warmed) as well. We do not have anything else besides a wood stove and a refrigerator.
We are: A family that resides in Rio de Janeiro and that every weekend goes to the farm.
When to come: all year
Additional comments: Our mission is to show our neighbors that there are other sources of income besides milk, because the region is a major producer of dairy products, which creates deforestation to allow open pastures. Also, we would like WWOOFers to visit the elementary schools in the town, because the children are happy to learn more about other cultures. They, who mostly come from low income families, do not have many opportunities, and they consider WWOOFERs very important people in their lives.

Description: Because we are located near the center of the city of San Carlos, this property is not a farm like most in the list of registered WWOOF Brazil, but a site with approximately 1,500 m2 in the proximity of a major city. We work in a garden where we use to feed ourselves: we have chickens, fruit and wood stove, there is also a studio for musical practice. We are starting a project in order to work on issues relating to the urban context, drawing upon an apparent obstacle of being located in the city and not in the countryside. Thus, we seek to develop themes such as urban permaculture and social; theoretical debate about sustainable development and use the location as a springboard for communication with the environment, taking advantage of the proximity of many individuals. The voluntary activities relate less to a rural daily life. Among the tasks for volunteers, from the basics for maintaining the yard, watching the chickens, cleaning kitchen and rooms, general cleaning up, the writing and design projects, talk with neighbors, mapping of potential gardens and spaces in the region, communication etc.. Volunteers will have experience on urban sustainability, with great focus for developing techniques and trends for sustainable development today.

We can guarantee that both these spots are special places in Alto Paraiso/High Paradise. Come WWOOF and be part of a great project that aims to bring environmental education and awareness to a region under threat by human lack of vision.
Accomodation: When building the eco-cabins in town, volunteers will initially sleep in a yurt/bell tent or tipee and once cabins are ready WWOOFers can move in. On the land there is accommodation in good rooms separate from the main house or one can put up a tent and use the house facilities.
Food: In town, communal kitchen will be set up and people can either fix their own food or there might be someone cooking if there are a few workers on site. Alternatively, we can fix a system so that they can eat in our vegetarian restaurant at the centre. On the land, volunteers can decide whether they want to cook their food or join the local workers.
We are: a Londoner that just moved back to Brazil, her country of origin to live closer to nature. Zoologist, environmentalist, permaculturist, ongoing student, activist, creative, seeker. In town; managing to hook up with some great people that are joining her projects and those on the land; currently living by the foot of the most amazing cliffs with some chickens, a couple of dogs, 3 cats, 2 local helpers, 3 species of wild monkeys in the forest-back garden, macaws and toucans flying overhead.
When to come: Help needed ASAP!!! we are entering the rainy season so we need to plant a lot now! all year round, would prefer a minimum 3-month stay but will be flexible. Would prefer people to have some organic gardening or bio-construction experience but likewise am flexible if willing to work hard and commit to the projects in hand.
