tomatoes, radishes, beets, carrots, sweet peppers, lettuce and

Description:
We are situated in the middle of the Tingua Reserve, outside
of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The orphanage aims to take children
away from aggression, drugs & criminality in Rio and surrounding
suburbs. It provides these children with shelter, nutrition,
education and a lot of freedom to play.
In
February 2007 our new organic farming project was initiated thanks
to sponsors and the arrival of Juan Bautista an Argentinean Agriculturalist
who brought enthusiasm, a lot of ideas and the hard working example,
which made each and everyone enthusiastic about the project. Within
2 months he realized a running organic farm and the involvement
of staff, volunteers and children of the orphanage.
Long
Term objectives of the project)
1. Provide quality food for the children and teenagers
2. Provide farming education to children and teenagers
3. Make the project self-sustaining and guarantee continuity
4. Pass on knowledge to the surrounding impoverished farmers
We
are looking for a Project Leader to take over the responsibility
of this project to help with continuity and development, plus
enhance the involvement of the kids and the community. You need
to be able to efficiently manage the project and to coordinate
the other organic farming volunteers. As the project is still
evolving we are open to new ideas and suggestions.
We
are also looking for Volunteers willing to gain farming experience
by providing daily farm maintenance. Organic farming skills
are very welcome since our project is young and our team is
still learning. However this is not a must and you will learn
quickly the basics of organic farming.
You
will work approximately 6 hours a day. We need enthusiastic,
hardworking, nature loving, volunteers who like to work on our
farm. We are situated at the outskirts of the Tingua reserve,
which means that you will be surrounded by beautiful green mountains.
A fantastic experience; an opportunity to see Brazil, people,
life and yourself at whole different level!
Accommodation:
You receive accommodation and food in exchange for your services.
Shared accommodation is available in the volunteerfs house,
which houses up to 10 volunteers involved in various roles in
the orphanage. There is normally space for 2-3 WWOOFers to work
on the organic farm
Food:
Meal times are shared with the children as a community; there
is also a kitchen available in the volunteerfs house if you
wish to prepare your own food.
Additional Comments:
The organic project is located within the orphanage grounds,
therefore it is important that you enjoy or have had experience
working with children. You can combine your organic farming
work with activities with the children and doing various tasks
in the orphanage.

BRA031
State: Minas Gerais
Type of property: Family owned
Size (ha): 24
Cultivos: Berries and vegetables
We speak: English, spanish, some
german
Description: We are small family
farm, up in the Mantiqueira mountains chain, in the south of
Minas Gerais state. We are located halfway between Sao Paulo
city (3 hours) and the famous old mining towns of Minas (another
3 hours), at approximately 1600 meters of altitude (+- 4500
feet) in a small town called Camanducaia. It is a very beautifull
region around the farm, mountanious, with a very peculiar vegetation
and a lot of wild life. Because we are very high up, even during
the summer temperatures at night go down to 13, 14 celcius.
So there's always a fire going on.
The
farm is 25 km from the town, in a small rural village where
most of the people either work with logging or potato growing.
We are the only organic farm in a 30 km radius, but there are
other organic farmers in a neighbouring town, who we sell part
of our produce to.
In
the village there\'s a Waldorf (antroposophical) lower school
(just 15 minutes walk from the farm gate), were around 250 children
attend every day. This is quite a famous school around the world
because it\'s probably one of the only public/free waldorf schools
in the world, and all the kids who attend are from a very poor/rural
background (most of the parents are iliterate for example) and
the school survives mostly on donations from Europe, so if you
want to volunteer there also, you are very welcomed.
This
is a commercial farm, were we grow mainly vegetables for whole
sale, and during summer we have small fruits, blackberries and
raspberries. Well, the raspberries are not doing so good, mainly
because selling them is very difficult for such a remote small
farm. But we grow a lot vegetables!
A
volunteer on the farm could expect to work as much as they fell
like, but the commom activities would be: weeding (yes! we are
organic), carring havy stuff (in Brazil bags on a farm weigh
a lot), cleaning the growing fields, harvesting (a lot), packing,
compost making weed wacking, applying fertilizers, and weeding...
It sounds a lot, it is, but we do everything in a good pace
so we don't kill ourselves. Days usually start at 7am and end
5pm. It's very rare to work longer. The volunteers should fell
free to work as much as they want, but please have im mind that
you will be expected to help when we need help. But you will
have enough time for leisure, we just have to work it out.
The
farm manager have done woofing in USA more than once, and he
knows what woofers and farmers are expecting.
There
is a lot to do around the farm if you like hiking, camping,
rock climbing, etc., specially in a very wild enviroment. There
are some great spots for hiking, wild camping, nice rivers and
even some waterfalls.
This
is a remote region, it takes around 45 minutes to get to town
through a dirt road, but it is a very peacefull and safe community.
If you are worried about violence of any sort, forget it, everybody
here knows eachother and are very friendly. You won't be kidnaped
by some socialist revolutionary group!
Having
done woofing myself, i would say that staying with us would
be something really good for people travelling around South
America and wants to experience real life in remote communities.
But please have in mind that our community is not terribly poor
or primitive. It is poor, but people have decent lifes.
We
accept volunteers to stay any period of time, even a couple
of days if all you want is to see some of the "real south
america". Couples are prefered, up to three people we can
still find some work for all of you, but four is too much. Well,
get in touch if you fell this sounds like a nice experience
and we sort something.
We
have very good wireless internet access (Skype works!), a crapy
cell phone, television and even a dvd player! We can also arrange
to pick you up on the airport if you are willing to pay for
the fuel (not much) and schedule permits.
This is a small farm, but the production is commercial so i
believe it's a good experience for someone interested in serious
organic farming in a tropical developing country. Also, the
farm is close to a very unique Waldorf school and volunteers
will have the opportunity to help there as much as they fell
like. You can teach them some of your language, do some repairing,
help playing with the kids on break times, help them with their
vegetable garden, or teaching a hobby you have, etc.
And
finally, this is a beautifull remote region in the mountains
of South America, with very friendly people.
Accomodation:
We have a very nice detached house, with two bedrooms, bathroom
with a shower running hot water heated in a wood stove, living
room and kitchen (no fridge). If you want you can also camp
anywhere around the farm, there are very nice spots for wild
camping.
Food:
Volunteers can get as much farm produce they want from the fields
(vegetables), and the farmer will supply basic things like rice,
flour, beans, eggs, oil, etc. Other vegetables or more specific
food itens are up to the volunteers, and they can get that in
grocery stores. We drive often to the town so that's not a problem.
Volunteers will probably fix their own food most of the times,
but certainly some meals will be shared, depending of the schedule.
We do eat meat, but good vegetarian food is welcomed!
Additional comments:
If you are interested, please get in touch and we will send
more info and some pictures of the farm and region. While you
are here we can also give you some hints and tips about places
to visit in Brazil that are not to far or troublesome for you.
